Platform extensions are one of the most underestimated, yet extremely helpful, features on certain aerial work platforms. Especially with scissor lifts and telehandler attachments, they often make a decisive difference in practical use. In this article, you'll learn what a platform extension is, which machines feature it, when it's useful—and what you should pay attention to when operating it.
What is a platform extension?
A platform extension is an extendable part of the work platform that can be extended horizontally – either manually or electrically. Unlike a telescopic boom or an articulated extension, the work platform remains at the same height. The extension only extends the reach of the standing area in one direction.
Where is a platform extension typically used?
Scissor lifts
Most modern scissor lifts – whether electric or all-terrain (RT) – feature an integrated platform extension . This can typically be extended by 90 to 150 cm , providing additional reach without having to relocate the platform.
Typical areas of application:
- Facade work
- Working over obstacles (e.g. parapet, skylight, canopy)
- Installations in hall construction
- Ceiling mounting along walls
Work baskets for telehandlers
A manually extendable platform extension is also often part of the equipment for add-on work baskets – i.e., platforms mounted on the telescopic arm of a telehandler . Here, it offers more flexibility, for example, for roof installations or transporting materials on inclined surfaces.
How is the platform extension operated?
For scissor lifts
- usually unlocked mechanically (foot pedal, locking handle)
- Extension is pushed forward manually
- The locking mechanism engages automatically
For larger stages or premium models:
- electric drive via control panel
- Extension can be extended continuously
For add-on platforms for telehandlers
- to unlock manually
- simple sliding guide with locking mechanism
- on some models, fold down

When does a platform extension make sense?
A platform extension is particularly useful when:
- you regularly work along fixed structures, e.g. walls, window bands or facades
- moving the stage is difficult or time-consuming
- you need more freedom of movement on large platforms, e.g. two people with tools
Advantage in practice
With a platform extension you can gain up to 1.5 m of additional reach without moving the stage - this saves time and increases efficiency.
What should I keep in mind when using it?
Some important points for safe use:
-
The load-bearing capacity of the platform may be reduced when pushed open.
→ Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions (e.g. max. 200 kg in the extension area). -
Only work on level, stable surfaces.
The extended lever arm increases the load on the chassis. - Never overload the extension with tools or misuse it as a storage area.
- Retract completely after use – especially important when moving the platform.
- Visual inspection before use: Check locking, catch, guide.
Common misunderstandings
-
A platform extension does not replace a boom.
It only offers linear forward reach extension , no lateral or vertical movement. - Not every stage has an extension.
Smaller models (e.g. 5.80 m) or indoor stages may not require this due to space or weight constraints.
Conclusion: Platform extension saves time – if you use it correctly
A platform extension offers real advantages on the construction site , especially with scissor lifts and add-on platforms . You can work faster, more flexibly, and more safely – without having to constantly relocate the platform.
But as with any function, only those who know how it works and what it is allowed to do can work safely.
