Important information if you want to rent a telehandler

Do you need a telehandler license?

Yes, to operate a telehandler safely and legally, you need a special telehandler license. Here are the details you should know:

Driving license requirements in public spaces

To operate a telehandler up to 20 km/h (maximum design speed) in public spaces, you must have at least a Class L driving license. This class allows you to drive agricultural and forestry tractors up to 40 km/h (maximum design speed), provided they are used exclusively for these purposes.

Higher speeds and vehicle weight

If the telehandler is a self-propelled work machine requiring registration and travels at speeds exceeding 20 km/h (top speed), the required driving license depends on the vehicle weight. However, at least a category L license is still required for speeds up to 25 km/h (top speed).

Additional requirements

Regardless of your driving license class, you must carry an operator's license for the relevant telehandler, both on construction sites and in public areas. This license proves that you have completed special training in the safe operation of the telehandler.

Training and operator ID

The operator's license training includes both theoretical and practical content. During the theoretical training, you'll learn basic safety regulations, the various applications of the telehandler, and proper maintenance. During the practical training, you'll practice driving and operating the machine safely under the guidance of an experienced trainer.

Can you drive a telehandler on the road?

Yes, under certain conditions, you are allowed to drive a telehandler on the road. Here are the most important points to consider:

Permit-free use

Telehandlers are self-propelled machines and do not require registration up to a maximum design speed of 20 km/h. They may be used on public roads under certain conditions.

Registration and equipment

To operate a telehandler on public roads, you must register the machine with the relevant authority. It must also meet the following requirements:

  • Complete lighting according to StVZO:All lighting equipment must comply with the provisions of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
  • Labeling:The machine must be legibly marked with the owner's address and a speed sticker.

Obligations to carry

As a driver, you must carry the following items:

  • Copy of the general operating permit (ABE) or data confirmation
  • first aid kit
  • warning triangle
  • Safety vest
  • Warning light (from 3.5 t total weight)
  • Wheel chock (from 4.0 t total weight)

Regulations for attachments

During road travel, attachments must be removed. Buckets must be equipped with a scraper edge protection strip.

  • Rear-axle steering:This must be locked because front-axle steering is mandatory in road traffic.
  • Work lights:Must be turned off.
  • Working hydraulics:Must be deactivated.
  • Swivel functions:Must be locked.
