Important information if you want to rent a telehandler

Do you need a telehandler license?

Yes, to operate a telehandler safely and legally, you need a special telehandler license. Here are the details you should know:

Driving license requirements in public spaces

To operate a telehandler up to 20 km/h bbH (maximum design speed) in public spaces, you must have at least a class L driving license. This class allows you to drive agricultural and forestry tractors up to 40 km/h bbH, provided they are used exclusively for these purposes.

Higher speeds and vehicle weight

If the telehandler is a self-propelled work machine that requires registration and travels at more than 20 km/h bbH, the required driving license depends on the vehicle weight. However, at least class L is still required up to a speed of 25 km/h bbH.

Additional requirements

Regardless of your driving license class, you must carry an operator's license for the relevant telehandler both when operating on construction sites and in public spaces. This license proves that you have completed special training in the safe operation of the telehandler.

training and operator ID

The training for the operator's license includes both theoretical and practical content. In the theoretical training, you will learn the basic safety regulations, the various uses of the telehandler and proper maintenance. In the practical part, you will practice driving and operating the device safely under the guidance of an experienced trainer.

Can you drive the telehandler on the road?

Yes, under certain conditions you can drive a telehandler on the road. Here are the most important points to consider:

Permit-free use

Telescopic loaders are self-propelled work machines and do not require registration up to a maximum design speed of 20 km/h. You can use them on public roads under certain conditions.

Registration and Equipment

To move a telehandler on public roads, you must register the machine with the relevant authority. It must also meet the following requirements:

  • Complete lighting according to StVZO:All lighting equipment must comply with the provisions of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
  • Labeling:The machine must be legibly marked with the owner's address and a speed sticker.

carrying obligations

As a driver, you must carry the following items:

  • Copy of the general operating permit (ABE) or data confirmation
  • first aid kit
  • warning triangle
  • safety vest
  • warning light (from 3.5 t total weight)
  • wheel chock (from 4.0 t total weight)

regulations for attachments

When driving on the road, attachments must be removed. Buckets must be fitted with a scraper edge protection strip.

driving requirements

  • rear-axle steering:This must be locked because front-axle steering is mandatory in road traffic.
  • Work lights:Must be turned off.
  • Working hydraulics:Must be disabled.
  • Swivel functions:Must be locked.
  • Boom:Must be completely lowered.

Different regulations for faster telehandlers

Different regulations apply to telehandlers with a top speed of more than 20 km/h. Find out about the specific requirements that apply to these faster machines.
