Is a lifting platform license mandatory?

Yeswho wants to operate a lifting platform (elevating work platform),must be trained and instructed– this is required by law.

A recognized certificate such as theSYSTEM CARDmeets the requirements ofDGUV Principles 308-008 / 100-500and is in GermanyMandatory for commercial use.

Are a lifting platform and a mobile elevating work platform the same thing?

Not quite.In everyday language, both terms are often used interchangeably, but there are technical differences:

OneAerial work platformserves thePassenger lift at height– e.g. during assembly, maintenance or tree pruning.

OneLifting platformcan also be used forLifting vehicles or loadsbe used, for example in workshops.

When people are lifted up, it is correctly referred to as aAerial work platform.

Who is allowed to drive a mobile elevating work platform?

A mobile elevating work platform may only drivewho is trained and commissioned by the employerbecame.

LoudDGUV Rule 100-500is arecognized operator training with theoretical and practical parts is mandatory– e.g. about theSYSTEM CARD.

A driving license isnot required, except for self-propelled truck-mounted work platforms in road traffic.

How much does aerial work platform training cost?

Depending on the provider and scope, the costs for training are usually between150 and 300 € net.

Which G-test is required for mobile elevating work platforms?

For working with aerial work platforms, theOccupational health care according to G 41 (“Work with risk of falling”) recommended.

It checks whether a person is physically and healthily suitable,to work safely at height– but isnot legally binding, but depends on the employer's risk assessment.

What test questions are included in the aerial platform license?

During training for aerial work platforms (often called the "lifting platform driver's license"), the theory exam includes typical questions on safety, technology, and regulations. Examples include:

  • What personal protective equipment (PPE) is required?
  • How is a daily visual inspection of the stage carried out?
  • What should you keep in mind when working at heights?
  • How do you react in the event of an emergency or technical failure?
  • When may the stage not be operated (e.g. in windy conditions or when tilted)?

The test is usually a multiple-choice test, supplemented by a practical driving and operating test.

What driving license do I need for a lifting platform?

No driving license is required to operate stationary or self-propelled aerial work platforms on private property – but recognized training according to DGUV is mandatory.

If the platform is moved on public roads (e.g. truck-mounted work platforms), you need:

  • Driving license class B for vehicles up to 3.5 t
  • Driving license class C or C1 for larger truck-mounted work platforms
Which employees are allowed to operate a lifting platform?

Only employees who have been trained in accordance with DGUV 308-008 and have been authorized in writing by the employer are permitted to operate a mobile elevating work platform.

Prerequisite is:

  • Minimum age 18 years
  • physical and mental fitness
  • Verified training with theoretical and practical examination (e.g. via the SYSTEM-CARD)
